Memories, Motivation and Medicine

My earliest memories all revolve around 'making things'. My cubby hole of treasures was a big cupboard in the kitchen that stored all my materials and equipment, endless sheets of paper, paints and glue that I would get through in record time. It was known as 'the making cupboard' and I frequented it more than the fridge.

As I got older art was my whole life, my work and also my salvation. I went to college and studied hard and left with a triple distinction Btec national diploma in Art and Design. My confidence grew from there and I went straight in to a three year BA (HONS) Fine Art degree at The Arts Institute Bournemouth (Now known as Arts University Bournemouth).

Since graduating my life has changed a lot, I have relocated back to where I grew up and have now got a little family of my very own. The only thing that has stayed consistent is my need to create, it's not just a hobby but a mixture of therapy, escapism, expression, routine, medicine, salvation and above all these its an addiction that I will never give up.

Broken before it even begun................

I wanted to be glued back together myself. I was broken, I was upset..... I was not defeated.

During the summer before I moved away to start my Fine Art Degree I had an accident, ironically the accident occurd while celebrating the fact that I was about to move away and start my new life and hopefully an amazing career as an artist.

I wasnt sure of many things at the younge age of 18 but I was sure that my future was, just like my life had always been, centred around art. I was so happy to have got in to my first choice of universities that I unfortunantly got a bit carried away with the celebrations.

I have written a blog which explains more about the struggle I have had with my wrist.
This is what 9 wrist operations looks like. The largest scar has been opened 5 times, there are 2 scars on the front and 2 on the back as well as k wire and camera holes. My last operation was 2 years ago when tendons were harvested from my left foot to be used as an elastic band. I have had endless pins and been through 4 metal plates, a hook and anchor. During one of my operations I was kept awake without a general anaesthetic (as was the preferred way in Pulvertaft Hand Centre Darby) I heard all the machinery and my whole body shook every time a new hole was drilled in to the bones for the whole 7 hour long operation. I don't think that this should be something I am ashamed of and in fact I am proud to have gone through all that and still be able to draw. It didn't stop me from getting an art degree and any future operations will not stop me from continuing to do what I love! I am scarred but I'm not scared!
